Christening of 2,500 TEU container vessel Thomas Mann, the largest and most sophisticated newbuild containership in Jurong Shipyard

Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of SembCorp Marine, announces today the christening of the S$55 million “Thomas Mann”, a 2,500 TEU container vessel.

The newbuild containership will be christened “Thomas Mann” this morning by Lady Sponsor Mrs Betsy Schlűter, wife of Mr Jens-Peter Schlűter, Chairman of Reederei Schlűter (RKS), in Jurong Shipyard.

Owned by RKS, the 2,500 TEU Thomas Mann is a proprietary design of Jurong Shipyard. The vessel, measuring 213m x 32.2m x 16.5m, is propelled by a powerful 25,270 KW main engine and has a high speed of 23.0 knots. Equipped with 400 TEU reefer containers, it has a total container-carrying capacity of 2,586 TEU, with the ability to accommodate 1,628 TEU on deck and 958 TEU in the cargo holds. The vessel’s design is a significant improvement over Jurong Shipyard’s previous series of 831 TEU and 1,078 TEU container vessels.

Mr Wong Weng Sun, Executive Director of Jurong Shipyard, said, “Thomas Mann is the largest and most sophisticated containership the yard has built to date. This successful newbuilding marks the first in our series of high capacity vessels in the 2,500 TEU range, which are custom-designed for quality, durability and speed. It is a testimony of our strong design and shipbuilding capabilities.”

Mr Jens-Peter Schlűter, Chairman of RKS, said, “We are very pleased with Thomas Mann, as its 2,500 TEU design fulfills our high-performance standards. With its large capacity and fast speed, this high-specification carrier will be an important addition to our fleet. We would like to commend the Jurong Shipyard team for their professionalism and a job well done.”

Thomas Mann is the first of two RKS-owned 2,500 TEU container vessels built by Jurong Shipyard. The second unit is currently under construction in the Shipyard and is scheduled for delivery in October 2004.

Scheduled for delivery by the end of November 2003, Thomas Mann will be deployed on a two-year charter to Evergreen Marine Corp, a Taiwanese shipping company, for service along the China-Adriatic trade route.
