Innovative ideas at Sembcorp Marine Green Wave Environmental Care Competition show strong understanding of sustainability among students

Singapore, February 23, 2017: Concerned about the harmful impact of oil spills on marine flora and fauna, three secondary school students created a material which absorbs oil pollutants from seawater.

Separately, a team of four Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students devised a propagation system that helps repopulate horseshoe crabs, an endangered species, in new marine eco-systems.

These were among the standout entries from the year-long 2016 Sembcorp Marine Green Wave Environmental Care Competition, which drew a total of 279 projects from 930 students.

Sixty-nine teams from primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, ITEs and tertiary institutions received prizes this morning from Mr Ng Chee Meng, Minister for Education (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport, at the Green Wave awards ceremony and exhibition in the Marina Mandarin.

Started in 2003, Green Wave raises awareness and interest among students about the importance of sustainability as the world faces growing environmental threats.

Through this competition, which is open to the region’s tertiary institutions since 2014, Sembcorp Marine and its industry partners provide students with an annual platform to showcase their practical ideas for achieving environmental sustainability.

Mr Wong Weng Sun, President & CEO of Sembcorp Marine, said: “Green Wave encourages students to take responsibility for their own environment. It is heartening to see so many of them stepping up to the challenge with highly innovative ideas for environmental care and protection.”

“We thank our panel of judges, and co-sponsors BP Shipping and Shell International Eastern Trading Company, for their unwavering support of this event,” Mr Wong said. “We all agree that the increasingly thoughtful and sophisticated entries we see from each successive Green Wave competition bode well for Singapore’s long-term sustainability management.”
