Green Wave Environmental Care Competition sees growing maturity among students in tackling environmental challenges
Singapore, February 26, 2016: The annual Sembcorp Marine Green Wave Environmental Care Competition is witnessing a growing maturity among students in addressing a broad spectrum of environmental issues.
In a strong display of creativity, innovation and practical applications, some 850 students submitted 234 projects for the 2015 year-long competition, tackling a gamut of environmental challenges that ranged from water preservation and waste management to the protection of various ecosystems.
Among the winning entries, top marks went to a non-drip tap devised by primary school students to reduce water wastage; as well as a submission by Indonesian tertiary participants on wastepaper-derived super-absorbent aerogels that could be used for oil spill cleanups.
The 2015 competition culminated in an awards ceremony this morning at the Marina Mandarin, with guest of honour and Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli bin Masagos Mohamad presenting prizes to 59 teams from the primary, secondary, junior college, Institute of Technical Education and tertiary categories.
Mr Masagos said: “Our students have always shown promising potential, and it is heartening to see this paired with a rising green consciousness to create solutions for our sustainability. I hope the energy and dynamism of our youth will inspire the wider community to take care of our environment.”
Started 13 years ago in 2003, the Green Wave competition has been a regular platform for Singaporean students to showcase their green ideas.
In 2014, the competition was extended to the region’s tertiary institutions. It is now beginning to attract outstanding submissions from overseas, with Indonesian participants clinching two top prizes in the 2015 event.
Commenting on this positive development, Sembcorp Marine President & CEO Wong Weng Sun said: “The winning entries from our Indonesian participants suggest there is a rich talent for innovative environmental solutions in the region. Through Green Wave, we want to encourage the sharing of good ideas to help everyone better manage common environmental challenges on the local, regional and global fronts.”
“As the call for sustainability becomes more pressing, we must embrace a collective commitment to keeping our environment cleaner and greener,” Mr Wong added.
