Turnkey Construction Success of Songa Eclipse – Songa Offshore’s First Ultra-deepwater Semi-submersible – at Jurong Shipyard

Singapore, 28 May 2011: Songa Offshore’s first 6th generation Friede & Goldman ExD Millennium Class ultra-deepwater semi-submersible newbuild – Songa Eclipse – is set to achieve a key milestone following its turnkey construction and naming in Sembcorp Marine’s subsidiary Jurong Shipyard

Marking Songa Offshore’s strategic entry and expansion into the deepwater drilling market, Songa Eclipse is the most advanced semi-submersible unit with the highest capability to join the company’s rig fleet.

The naming of Songa Eclipse was presided by Lady Sponsor Mrs Marianne Blystad, the wife of Mr Arne Blystad, Board Member, Songa Offshore, in the presence of key representatives and stakeholders at a ceremony in Jurong Shipyard on May 28, 2011.

Mr Trond Christensen, Chief Operating Officer of Songa Offshore, said: “Songa Eclipse signifies another great chapter in the history of Songa Offshore, which has over the last year developed from a pure mid-water rig operator into a deepwater player. We see this as a very important step for the company’s growth strategy and we are continually looking into additional growth opportunities as they arise. We would like to thank Jurong Shipyard, service providers and vendors for their professionalism during the rig construction and we are confident that this will continue until rig delivery and beyond.”

Mr Wong Weng Sun, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sembcorp Marine and Managing Director of Jurong Shipyard, said: “I would like to thank Songa Offshore for giving us the opportunity to work with them on the Songa Eclipse. The Songa Eclipse is the 10th of a series of semi-submersibles which Jurong Shipyard has built and we are confident that the rig will complement the premium fleet of Songa Offshore. We look forward to building on this win-win partnership and achieving our shared vision together.”

The 10th Friede & Goldman ultra-deepwater semi-submersible constructed by Jurong Shipyard, Songa Eclipse is a testimony to the yard’s proven track record in turnkey rig building, innovative fast-track semi-submersible construction and high standards of workplace safety, health and environment.

The high-specification dynamic positioning (DP2+) rig is capable of drilling to depths of more than 40,000 feet while operating in 10,000 feet of water. Engineered for stability and versatility with operational displacement of 43,400 metric tonnes at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons at 20 metres draft, the semi-submersible is suitable for operations in most of the world’s known challenging deepwater arena. The rig has the capacity to accommodate 164 persons.

Shortly after the naming, the rig will undergo commissioning and testing before its scheduled delivery.
