Second of a Series of Six 2,646 TEU Container Vessels to be Delivered to Wan Hai Lines
The second of a series of six 2,646 TEU container vessels built by Jurong Shipyard based on its in-house proprietary “Jubilee Class” design will be named Wan Hai 312 this morning by Guest-of-Honour and Lady Sponsor, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State for Transport and Finance, at Jurong Shipyard.
Mr Wong Weng Sun, Managing Director of Jurong Shipyard said “Wan Hai 312 will be one of the largest and most advanced of its kind designed and built in Singapore. The 2,646 TEU container vessel is constructed based on Jurong Shipyard’s proprietary “Jubilee Class” container design, a proven design developed by our shipyard’s in-house engineering team after extensive research and development.”
Leveraging on its experience and shipbuilding heritage, Jurong Shipyard developed the “Jubilee Class” design from its earlier range of 830 TEU and 1,100 TEU series containerships. The shipyard first ventured into containership building in 1997 with the construction of four 830 TEU units when it launched the proprietary containership design. Following the successful launch of the 830 TEU series, the shipyard further enhanced and developed the design for the 1,100 TEU container series. Six such units were built, each having a service speed of 19.5 knots.
The success and the strong demand for this category of feeder container vessels led to the launch of the “Jubilee Class” containership series, comprising container vessels in the 2,500 TEU and 2,600 TEU series. Two units of the 2,500 TEU series were delivered to German owner, Reederei Karl Schlùter in 2003 and 2004. A total of eight units, six for Wan Hai Lines and two for Reederei F Laeisz, were ordered when the shipyard launched its 2,600 TEU design series in 2003.
Scheduled for delivery end January 2006, Wan Hai 312 is the second of a series of six 2,646 TEU container vessels contracted by Wan Hai Lines at a total value of S$363 million. Wan Hai 312 will be the fourth vessel in the “Jubilee Class” series following the successful deliveries of two units of 2,586 TEU container vessels in 2003 and 2004, and the 2,646 TEU sister vessel Wan Hai 311 in the third quarter of 2005.
With a high service speed of up to 23 knots, Wan Hai 312 is capable of high homogeneous container intake of more than 1,960 TEU at 14 ton per TEU. Measuring 213m x 32.2m x 16.5m, the container vessel is equipped with 400 reefers and has a high container-carrying capacity of 2,646 TEU (1,688 TEU on deck and 958 TEU in hold). It has a lashing bridge that allows for the loading of two tiers of high-cube containers in the hold. Its hull has been specially designed to minimize propeller-induced vibration for operational performance.
On delivery, Wan Hai 312 will join sister ship Wan Hai 311 in servicing the requirements of Wan Hai’s growing customer base along the Intra-Asia and Trans-Pacific trade routes.
