Sembcorp Marine’s School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) supports 20,000 local students over 17 years of bursary support

  • More than $4 million SchoolBAG bursaries awarded since 2001
  • Some 1,065 students from 83 schools share $210,000 bursary fund this year

Singapore, November 8, 2017: The Sembcorp Marine School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) gave out $210,450 in bursaries to 1,065 primary, secondary and junior college students today, bringing the programme’s total contributions to over $4 million since its inception in 2001.

Now in its 17th year, the SchoolBAG programme has helped close to 20,000 needy students in their educational pursuits. These beneficiaries are from families with monthly incomes not exceeding $1,500.

Presenting the bursaries to student-representatives from 83 schools this afternoon was Guest-of-Honour Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry for Culture, Community & Youth and Ministry for Trade and Industry. She said, “All of us can play a part in helping our students reach their fullest potential. I would like to encourage more corporates to follow the example of Sembcorp Marine, and invest in our youths’ education. Your contribution will also help to grow SG Cares – a nationwide movement to encourage Singaporeans to look out for one another, and ensure that no one is left behind. Let us work together to build a more caring and cohesive society.”

Sembcorp Marine Chief Operating Officer Mr Ong Poh Kwee said the long-standing SchoolBAG programme demonstrates Sembcorp Marine’s unwavering support for the community. “We recognise that it is a privilege to help others in need, and we remain committed to doing so,” he said.

Mr Ong added, “Education is an important aspect of society and an area that Sembcorp Marine actively champions. We will continue to help nurture the next generation, and we hope that we will in some way encourage our SchoolBAG beneficiaries to pay it forward in the future.”

SchoolBAG bursaries are distributed in the following amounts:

  • $150 for Primary 1 to 3 students
  • $200 for Primary 4 and 5 students
  • $250 for Secondary 1 to 3 students
  • $300 for Junior College Year 1 students
