More on Sustainability at Sembcorp Marine
Over the years, Sembcorp Marine has embarked on operational enhancements and product diversification to drive sustainable business growth.
For example, the Group’s flagship Sembcorp Marine Tuas Boulevard Yard has been running a 120,000 sqm extensively automated steel fabrication facility since 2015 that enables Sembcorp Marine to strengthen its production capabilities and target new business opportunities in the oil and gas value chain.
Tuas Boulevard Yard boasts green features that optimise energy usage and reduce its environmental footprint. A new digital energy-saving system, to be developed next year, will generate and manage solar energy for greater energy efficiency and utility savings at the yard. As part of this energy-saving system, a 4.5 MWp solar roof – set to be the largest single solar rooftop in a Southeast Asian shipyard – will be installed atop the yard’s steel fabrication facility. Capable of delivering 5.38GWh of energy annually, the solar rooftop will effectively reduce 30 per cent of the grid-supplied electricity consumed at the steel fabrication facility during peak load.
With the move towards natural gas as a cleaner and more sustainable energy source, Sembcorp Marine has introduced a number of innovative solutions for the gas value chain. These include the Gravifloat near-shore LPG and LNG terminal solutions for liquefaction, regasification, storage and power generation. Gravifloat terminals are more flexible and cost-competitive alternatives to existing onshore and floating facilities as they are redeployable, modular and scalable.
Through its continuous research and development, Sembcorp Marine has developed a suite of green solutions for the offshore and marine industry, including the award-winning Semb-Eco LUV Ballast Water Management System which utilises ultra-violet and patented bio-fouling control technology to effectively disinfect invasive aquatic species in challenging water conditions.
Sembcorp Marine also partners DNV GL, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), A*STAR, NTU, and University of Glasgow to create sustainable green shipping solutions for better fuel efficiency, enhanced performance, lower exhaust emissions and cleaner discharges. The Group has opened up Tuas Boulevard Yard as a test-bedding platform for these research efforts, providing a living lab for the development of real-world solutions.
As part of its community outreach and engagement, Sembcorp Marine works closely with stakeholder partners and educational institutions to promote environmental sustainability through initiatives such as the Green Wave Environmental Care Competition which offers schools locally and in the region an annual platform to showcase their sustainability ideas. The Group also organises community care programmes, including the School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) which supports financially-disadvantaged students.
Within the Group, Sembcorp Marine offers employees equal opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The Group also collaborates with customers, vendors and other partners to improve workforce training, skills upgrading, and occupational safety and health practices at the yard.
