Sembcorp Marine Tuas Boulevard Yard Taps Solar Power Savings with SP Group’s Digital Solution

  • System integrating solar power to provide 30% of electricity consumed by Tuas Boulevard Yard’s steel structure fabrication workshop during peak load
  • Tuas Boulevard Yard to have largest single solar rooftop in a Southeast Asian shipyard

Singapore, October 23, 2017 – Sembcorp Marine and SP Group (SP) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a digital system at the local Sembcorp Marine Tuas Boulevard Yard that optimises energy consumption and harnesses solar energy for significant utility savings.

The digital energy-saving system will generate and manage solar power to effectively reduce 30 per cent of grid-supplied electricity consumed at the yard’s steel structure fabrication workshop during peak load. This in turn enhances the workshop’s sustainable production of steel components used for constructing ship hulls and topside structures at the yard.

Notably, the energy-saving system combines 4.5 MegaWattpeak (MWp) solar panels into what will be the largest single solar rooftop at a shipyard in Southeast Asia, to be installed atop the Tuas Boulevard steel fabrication workshop.

The solar rooftop will deliver up to 5.38GWh of energy annually – enough to power approximately 1,120 four-room flats and reduce 2,500 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, equivalent to removing 530 vehicles off local roads. This renewable energy output will contribute towards Singapore’s ambition to generate 350 MWp from solar power by 2020, as well as the country’s climate change pledge to cut national emissions intensity 36 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030.

Besides the solar rooftop, the digital energy-saving system at Tuas Boulevard Yard will feature energy storage capabilities, energy sensors and a real-time digital platform to monitor, analyse and optimise energy usage in the yard.

“We are very excited to partner SP Group in developing our flagship Tuas Boulevard Yard into a green and energy-efficient integrated shipyard,” said Mr Wong Weng Sun, Sembcorp Marine President and CEO.

“As a major energy consumer, Sembcorp Marine is investing proactively in solutions for sustainable operations that reduce our carbon footprint even as our yard activities expand and grow,” Mr Wong Weng Sun said. “With the implementation of a digital energy-saving system at Tuas Boulevard Yard, we are taking an important step towards this end, and we look forward to integrating other innovations into our sustainability efforts over time.”

“SP Group is committed to developing innovative solutions to help customers save energy and cost. This integrated digital system, built by SP’s in-house experts, will pave the way for wider adoption of such green technologies for sustainable business operations,” said Mr Wong Kim Yin, Group Chief Executive Officer, SP Group.

The Sembcorp Marine-SP project will commence in early 2018, and is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of the year.
