Sembcorp Marine’s School Book Assistance Grant: $3.8 million contributed to needy students since 2001

Some 1,154 students received $235,000 in bursaries this year, which will help defray their school and enrichment programme expenses

Singapore, November 4, 2016: Sembcorp Marine today awarded bursaries totalling $235,000 to 1,154 students through its annual School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) programme.

In a ceremony this afternoon at Yishun Primary School, Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance, presented cheques for amounts between $150 and $300 to student representatives from 85 schools.

Started in 2001, the SchoolBAG programme has contributed a cumulative total of $3.8 million in bursaries to over 18,600 students residing in neighbourhoods close to Sembcorp Marine’s Tanjong Kling and Admiralty yards. These students come from families with monthly incomes not exceeding $1,500.

The bursaries help defray the students’ school expenses and enrichment programme fees.

“Besides existing government schemes to help families and students in need, I’m glad that companies like Sembcorp Marine have stepped forward with their own initiatives to help students in their education journey. It’s a good example that all of us – the government, the private sector and the community – can do more together to build a more inclusive society and provide maximum opportunities for every child,” said Minister Lawrence Wong.

Mr Ong Poh Kwee, Sembcorp Marine Chief Operating Officer, said the long-running SchoolBAG programme highlights the company’s enduring commitment to community support.

“We believe young people, who are the future of our nation, should be given opportunities to grow their talent, focus on their studies, discover their passions and achieve their fullest potential,” Mr Ong said. “SchoolBAG is Sembcorp Marine’s way of helping to open these doors for them, and we have been doing it for the past 16 years.”

He added: “The growing number of SchoolBAG beneficiaries shows that Sembcorp Marine is positively impacting more and more students. This is immensely satisfying and motivates us to continue helping others.”

The SchoolBAG bursaries are awarded in the following quanta:

  • $150 for Primary 1 to 3 students
  • $200 for Primary 4 and 5 students
  • $250 for Secondary 1 to 3 students
  • $300 for Junior College Year 1 students
