Sembcorp Marine SchoolBAG Marks 15 Years of Supporting Needy Students in their Educational Journey

Over 17,500 students have benefited from SchoolBAG book grants since 2001

Singapore, Nov 18, 2015: Sembcorp Marine today marked the 15th anniversary of its School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) programme, with $256,000 of financial aid going to 1,250 primary, secondary and junior college students this year.

The grants help subsidise the students’ school expenses or enrichment programmes.

This morning, Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin awarded cheques of between $150 and $300 to recipients from 85 schools at a presentation ceremony in Yishun Town Secondary School.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tan said: “I would like to thank Sembcorp Marine for initiating and continuing with the SchoolBAG programme for the past 15 years. Such Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are slowly helping to transform our society bit by bit. CSR is not a new idea but it is definitely the way to go. I hope to see more corporate giving, which is beyond donations. I hope to see more companies encouraging their employees to volunteer and by providing the support such as giving staff paid time off to do good. Corporate giving is an investment to build a stronger and a more caring and resilient society.”

Sembcorp Marine Chief Operating Officer Ong Poh Kwee explains the company’s long-standing commitment to the SchoolBAG programme.

“The SchoolBAG programme is based on our recognition of education as a pillar of community development and nation-building,” he said at the presentation ceremony.

“By contributing a lump sum grant each year, we hope to lighten the financial burden of a group of needy students so that they can focus better on their studies and achieve the knowledge, skills and qualifications to build a brighter future for themselves, their families and the nation.”

Since its inception in 2001, the SchoolBAG programme has aided more than 17,500 students through a cumulative grant of $3.6 million. The beneficiaries are from families residing in neighbourhoods close to Sembcorp Marine’s Tanjong Kling and Admiralty shipyards, with monthly incomes not exceeding $1,500.

Grants awarded are as follows:

–       $150 for Primary 1 to 3 students

–       $200 for Primary 4 and 5 students

–       $250 for Secondary 1 to 3 students

$300 for Junior College Year 1 students
