Sembcorp Marine Celebrates Singapore’s 50 Years of Nation-Building and Economic Progress

Singapore, August 11, 2015: Sembcorp Marine today commemorated Singapore’s 50th year of independence and economic success in an observance ceremony held at the Sembcorp Marine Tanjong Kling Yard.

Some 800 employees, management staff, union representatives and contractor partners attended the event. Mr Heng Chee How, Senior Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), was the guest of honour.

In his speech, Mr Heng commended the contributions of the local marine and offshore industry, which had a total turnover of S$17 billion and provided more than 106,000 jobs last year.

Even though this industry is now facing headwinds from falling oil prices, Mr Heng said companies like Sembcorp Marine are not only meeting current challenges through productivity and efficiency improvements, but also continuing to plan ahead for future growth.

Mr Heng noted that strong labour-management relations within Sembcorp Marine have facilitated efforts to upgrade the skills and knowledge of employees.

“It is through this collaboration, and with the help of the government, that employees are kept well-trained through various upgrading programmes to meet the industry’s evolving needs,” he said.

Echoing Mr Heng’s message on the importance of training, Sembcorp Marine President and CEO Wong Weng Sun said Sembcorp Marine employees must constantly improve themselves in order to sustain the company’s growth momentum.

In July this year, Sembcorp Marine transitioned from a multi-brand organisation structure into a single brand under its long-term Transformation for Growth strategy. The company now focuses on four key capabilities: Rigs & Floaters; Repairs & Upgrades; Offshore Platforms; and Specialised Shipbuilding.

“In taking on the challenges and opportunities ahead, I want to encourage all employees to support one another in becoming better in every aspect of our business,” Mr Wong said.

“As One Sembcorp Marine – just as Singapore is one united people – we can and will achieve much more than the sum of our parts; and with that, I have no doubt we will move up the value chain to become the global leader in the marine and offshore industry.”

In a show of unity, participants of the National Day observance ceremony sang the national anthem and recited the Singapore Pledge.

The ceremony concluded with Mr Heng presenting awards to winners of the 2015 Sembcorp Marine Workplace Safety & Health Innovation Convention.
