Sembcorp Marine Marks 13 Years of Community Care with SchoolBAG: More Than $3 Million in Grant Contributions to Over 14,900 Needy Students Since 2001

Singapore, October 28, 2013: Sembcorp Marine continued to reach out to help needy students through its School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) programme with a contribution of close to $300,000 in grants this year to 1,306 student recipients from 83 schools. Since its launch 13 years ago, the SchoolBAG programme has contributed more than $3,055,300 in grants to over 14,900 student beneficiaries.

Part of Sembcorp Marine’s Community Social Responsibility Programme, the SchoolBAG initiative aims to ease the financial burden on low-income families through grants that subsidise their children’s educational expenses.

Student recipients can use the SchoolBAG grants to purchase basic school supplies, such as school textbooks, uniforms and stationery items, as well as fund enrichment programmes to augment their holistic development.

The broadening of the SchoolBAG programme over the last 13 years has seen recipient numbers and grant contributions increase almost two-fold since the start of the scheme in December 2001.

Held at Bukit View Primary School, the SchoolBAG presentation ceremony witnessed student representatives receiving their grants from Guest-of-Honour Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law.

In his speech, Mr K Shanmugam commended Sembcorp Marine for initiating the SchoolBAG programme as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives. He also lauded the Group’s efforts in caring for the less privileged in the community and enabling children “access to a good education regardless of their background or race, and gender or social stature”.

Mr Ong Poh Kwee, Deputy President of Sembcorp Marine, said: “The SchoolBAG scheme is one of the ways that we give back to society and, at the same time, make a positive difference in the lives of the students and their families. A good education is one of the foundations for a secure future. For this reason, we choose to supplement the many good schemes that various government agencies have in place to help these families.”
