Sembcorp Marine sets up Scholarship in honour of the late Mr Lua Cheng Eng
Singapore, December 9, 2011: Sembcorp Marine’s inaugural SCM-Lua Cheng Eng Scholarships were awarded for the first time to two undergraduate recipients in a poignant ceremony today.
The SCM-Lua Cheng Eng Scholarship was established in March this year as a tribute to Sembcorp Marine’s former Chairman, the late Mr Lua Cheng Eng, in honour of his significant contributions to the Group and the marine & offshore sector. The scholarship seeks to nurture promising talents who exemplify Mr Lua’s commitment, passion and drive to forge new frontiers of excellence for the company and the industry.
The event witnessed the presentation of the SCM-Lua Cheng Eng scholarships by Mrs Lua Cheng Eng in the presence of her daughter Ms Nina Lua and Sembcorp Marine’s President and CEO Mr Wong Weng Sun.
This year’s SCM-Lua Cheng Eng scholarships were awarded to Arnold Leong, a fourth-year mechanical engineering undergraduate from the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Fan Zhi Hong, a third year NUS mechanical engineering undergraduate specialising in Offshore Oil & Gas technology, after a stringent selection process.
Both scholars were chosen based on their excellent academic and co-curricular track records and passion towards the marine and offshore industry. After graduating, they will go on to pursue careers in Sembcorp Marine’s shipyards.
Under the SCM-Lua Cheng Eng Scholarship Programme, Sembcorp Marine will award each scholar $18,000 per year which will cover tuition fees and allowances from the second year of their university education. The Group targets to award up to two scholarships per year for the next 10 years to capable and dynamic individuals to further their engineering degree studies in reputable local universities.
The scholarship is open to undergraduates who have completed at least one year of studies in a relevant engineering discipline, with good academic results and exemplary co-curricular performance as well as a keen interest in the marine and offshore industry. Sembcorp Marine employees with excellent work performance and good potential are also eligible for the scholarship.
Tribute to Mr Lua Cheng Eng
The SCM-Lua Cheng Eng Scholarship is a fitting tribute to Mr Lua Cheng Eng – a visionary leader who had laid the foundation for the growth and success of Sembcorp Marine and Singapore’s marine & offshore industry.
A strong advocate and supporter of Sembcorp Marine’s expansion plans, Mr Lua had steered the Group’s strategic growth when he was the Chairman and Director of Sembcorp Marine (formerly known as Jurong Shipyard Limited) from January 1992 to May 1999 as well as from March 2005 to February 2006.
Mr Lua was instrumental in pushing ahead with the Group’s investment to build Singapore’s largest ULCC 500,000 dwt drydock, which came into operations in 1996 and laid the groundwork for the company’s foray into offshore activities. He also played a key role in Sembcorp Marine’s successful acquisition of Sembawang Shipyard in 1997.
A much-respected industry veteran, Mr Lua was a steadfast stalwart of Singapore’s maritime sector. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) for 20 years before retiring as NOL’s Chairman in 2002. Following that, he served as Senior Advisor at NOL, Jurong Port and Teledata (Singapore).
In his career, Mr Lua had served on the Board of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and was President of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO). He was a Director of Sembcorp Industries Ltd and a Member of the Temasek Advisory Panel, Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited. He also held directorships in various companies, including as Chairman of Jurong Technologies Industrial Corporation, as well as Director of Sincere Watch Ltd and LCE Consulting Pte Ltd.
In the area of public service, Mr Lua had served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Panama (non-resident) and Finland (non-resident) as well as a Council Member of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mr Lua was awarded Singapore’s Public Service Medal in 1979 and Public Service Star in 1999.
