Delivery of West Taurus Ahead of Schedule
Singapore, November 11, 2008: Jurong Shipyard, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, has successfully delivered the second ultra-deepwater semisubmersible rig – the West Taurus – to Norway’s leading energy Group Seadrill Limited, a week ahead of schedule.
West Taurus is the second of a series of four identical 6th generation dynamic positioning ultra-deepwater semi-submersible rigs built on a turnkey basis for Seadrill Limited, after the delivery of the first unit, West Sirius, in March 2008.
Following its successful delivery, the West Taurus has set sail on its maiden voyage to Brazil where it will be deployed for development drilling operations under a six-year charter with Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company.
Heralding a major milestone for Jurong Shipyard, the West Taurus is the first semisubmersible rig to be built using the yard’s proprietary “Transverse Skidding” methodology in combination with the “Load-out and Mating-in-Dock” technique. By leveraging on these breakthrough techniques, the yard is able to increase its capacity to deliver more than 2 semi-submersible rigs a year, while achieving high standards of quality, safety and reliability.
The Friede & Goldman Millennium Class Ex-D design West Taurus is capable of drilling up to 37,500 feet in ultra-deepwaters of up to 10,000 feet. Equipped with dynamic positioning capabilities, the rig is designed with an operational displacement of 43,400 metric tons at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons at 20 metres draft. It has 18,000 square feet of usable deck space and is able to carry a variable deck load of up to 8,000 tons.
Expressing his delight at the yard’s early rig delivery, Mr Alf C. Thorkildsen, CEO and President of Seadrill Limited, said: “A truly fantastic achievement. The West Taurus is the second semi-submersible drilling rig that Jurong delivered turnkey to Seadrill and most importantly the completion is ahead of schedule. In these challenging times, it is important for us to deliver and Seadrill congratulates Jurong Shipyard once again for this feat. We now have a partnership that delivers on promise and we look forward to more milestones in the future.”
Mr Wong Weng Sun, Managing Director of Jurong Shipyard, said: “The early delivery of the West Taurus is a firm endorsement of our innovative capabilities in fast-track rig construction and our status as a leading builder of highly sophisticated semi-submersible rigs. The joint commitment and teamwork by Jurong Shipyard, Seadrill and our project partners, vendors and contractors have made this milestone achievement a reality.”
