Sembcorp Marine Donates $152,350 in Schoolbag Grants To 742 Students

SembCorp Marine is pleased to announce that it will be donating a total of $152,350 in financial grants to assist 742 needy students under the Company.s School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) Scheme.

The SchoolBAG Scheme is an initiative under SembCorp Marine.s Community Responsibility and Care Programme to alleviate the financial burden of low-income households with schooling children. The grants aims to help families with a combined income of less than $1,250 to defray the cost of purchasing of school textbooks, uniforms and stationery items at the start of the academic year.

Working closely with the Ministry of Education, the company had identified a total of 61 schools in close proximity to SembCorp Marine.s shipyards: Jurong Shipyard and Sembawang Shipyard – for participation in the scheme.

Under the scheme, recipients in Primary 1 to 3 will each receive $150 in grants, while those in Primary 4 to 5 will receive $200. Secondary school recipients will be given $250 each, while those studying in junior colleges and centralized institutes will each receive $300.

For this year, the recipients to the SchoolBAG grants include 709 students from the participating schools and 33 children of employees within the SembCorp Marine Group. In all, a total of $34,500 will be given out to 230 students in Primary 1 to 3; $43,400 to 217 students in Primary 4 to 5; $70,250 to 281 secondary students; and $4,200 to 14 students in junior colleges and centralized institutes.

This is the second consecutive year that SembCorp Marine is working in close collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Education for such a cause. The Guest-of-Honour, Mr Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Manpower will present the SchoolBAG grants to the student representatives from all the participating schools present here this afternoon at Jiemin Primary School.
