Sembawang Shipyard ― the first major Singapore shipyard to achieve IMO’s International Ship and Port Facility Code Compliance
SembCorp Marine is pleased to announce that its subsidiary Sembawang Shipyard is the first major shipyard in Singapore to be presented with the Provisional Statement of Compliance of a Port Facility for meeting the IMO.s International Code for the Security of Ships and Port Facilities (the .ISPS. code) at its facility located in Sembawang.
At a ceremony held on February 27, 2004 at the shipyard, Captain M. Segar, Port Master, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) presented the provisional certificate to Mr P K Ong, Executive Director of Sembawang Shipyard.
The ISPS code requires ships. crew and ports to train their staff and develop comprehensive, audited security plans and procedures to counter security threats.
The approval of Sembawang Shipyard’s facility security procedures and plans is well ahead of Singapore.s earlier deadline of April 1, 2004 and the official IMO July 1, 2004 deadline.
Sembawang Shipyard.s Chairman, Mr Heng Chiang Gnee said, .We are very pleased to be given the certification. In view of our business clientele such as the oil majors and major international shipping companies, besides health, safety and environment policies, security is also an important aspect of our
business deliverables. This achievement of early ISPS certification demonstrates the shipyard.s security preparedness and pro-action..
Sembawang Shipyard has CISCO Singapore as its RSO (Recognised Security Organisation) and had submitted its security plan to MPA since February 2, 2004.
Captain Segar commended Sembawang Shipyard.s efforts. He said .The early certification of Sembawang.s compliance with the ISPS Code is recognition of the shipyard.s pro-active efforts in this area. It took an early lead in its security preparation and by October 2003, was able to share on its experience on shipyard security with more than 450 maritime personnel at an MPA seminar. I encourage other port facility operators to step up their efforts to ensure early compliance.
